Is Mold Making You Sick?
There are many types of mold found in virtually all buildings. With proper preparation, the FreshStart Process eliminates the viability of common molds — their ability to grow, reproduce, or produce harmful toxins. Mold needs water and a food source (usually wood or drywall) to grow, along with low light and poor air circulation.
Step 1 — Determine the Source of Water
Common sources: a broken pipe or plumbing seal, a roof leak, a gap around a door or window, poor drainage, a misdirected sprinkler head, or high ambient humidity.
Step 2 — Eliminate the Source
Depending on severity, solutions range from adding a dehumidifier to hiring a licensed mold remediation contractor. A commonly cited standard: once there’s more than 10 sq. ft. of visible mold with structural damage, it’s worth bringing in a licensed professional — though rules vary by state, county, and city, so check locally.
Step 3 — Remove Damaged Materials
This can be as simple as removing a pile of wet rags, or as involved as removing walls, plumbing, or HVAC ducting.
Step 4 — The FreshStart Process
The final step — treating the space to eliminate the effects of the surface mold that remains.
Preparation for the FreshStart Process
A FreshStart treatment takes about 5 hours from arrival to re-entry. No people or pets (except fish) can be on the premises during treatment.
Checklist
- Place wet or soiled elastic clothing in closed drawers or cabinets.
- Point out any specific problem areas to the technician when they arrive.
- Open drawers, cupboards, vanities, and closets fully.
- Spread out closet clothing to allow full treatment exposure.
- Pre-treat, repair, or replace any materials that have absorbed urine, feces, or mold.
- Remove bedding from mattresses and drape it over furniture or doors.
- Delicate plants may be removed in advance, as some color lightening can occur.
